Is the tool truly free? What's the catch?
There's no catch. Free tier: 5 conversions per day, 5 files at once, 50 MB per file, OCR and encrypted PDFs included. We monetize through our optional ExcelMaster Add-in (AI inside Excel), not through this converter. The free tier is intentionally generous because the converter is our top-of-funnel for users who want more AI power inside Excel.
How do you preserve merged cells when most tools can't?
Our engine detects ColSpan and RowSpan in absorbed PDF tables and rebuilds them as native Excel merged ranges, rather than dumping every cell as a duplicated value. This is the #1 complaint about iLovePDF / Smallpdf / Google Drive OCR — and it's our biggest differentiator.
What happens to multi-page tables?
When a table spans multiple PDF pages with the same column structure and matching headers, we stitch them into one continuous sheet. Most tools fragment them into per-page subtables with repeated headers. (Cross-page stitching ships fully in our Sprint 1.4 release.)
Can it handle encrypted PDFs?
Yes — provide the password and we convert as usual. We do NOT attempt to brute-force or crack passwords. If you've lost a PDF's open-password, that's outside our scope.
Can it handle scanned PDFs (image-only / no text layer)?
Detection only for now — scanned PDFs need OCR. Use our companion Image → Excel tool (launching in Sprint 3, week 5-6) which uses commercial OCR + AI calibration for 145 languages including CJK.
What output formats are supported?
xlsx (default), xlsm, csv, ods, xls, xlsb, json, html, xml, mhtml, md. xlsx/xlsm/csv/ods are emitted natively; the rest go through a Cells round-trip.
Where are my files stored? For how long?
TLS 1.3 to our EU/US data centers · AES-256 at rest · automatic deletion within 1 hour of conversion. No human reviews your file. We do not use your content to train any AI model. ToS at /terms-of-service.
What's the file size limit?
50 MB per file in the free tier — the most generous in the industry (PDFCandy 40 MB, Foxit 15 MB, Smallpdf 5 MB free). For larger files, split your PDF or contact us.
Why does my conversion take 30+ seconds?
Complex PDFs with cross-page tables, embedded charts, or many merged cells trigger our precision pipeline — slower but higher fidelity. Plain text PDFs typically finish in under 5 seconds.
