Most free Word mergers leave the chapter outlines as user homework. We don't.

What you actually get back

  • Chapter bookmarks for every source

Every source document becomes a chapter with a bookmark anchor. Open the result in Word, hit Ctrl+G → Bookmark, and you'll see every chapter listed — exactly the navigation Microsoft Word users expect from a real publication.

  • Auto Table of Contents

Optional. Inserts a TOC field at the front of the merged document with hyperlinked entries to each chapter. UpdateFields() runs on save so the TOC is populated and clickable from the first open.

  • Continuous page numbers

Strips every section's RestartPageNumbering override before save so pagination flows 1..N across chapters — no more chapter 2 starting at page 1, which is the giveaway that a free tool merged your file.

  • Unified styles option

Force every chapter to use the FIRST document's style table (Heading 1 / Heading 2 / Normal). The output looks like one template, not five drafts stitched together.

  • Encrypted documents accepted

Drop a password-protected .docx and we'll prompt for the open password. We never brute-force, never store the password, never log it. Mixed batches (some encrypted, some not) work fine.

  • DOCX, DOC, RTF, ODT, PDF output

Pick the output format that fits your workflow. DOCX is the default; PDF emits a single shareable archive copy at the same merge step — no separate Word-to-PDF round-trip needed.

Three clicks to a polished Word document

  1. 1Drag your .docx files into the upload area in the order you want them — top to bottom becomes chapter 1 to chapter N.
  2. 2Pick the toggles that fit your workflow. Auto chapter bookmarks and continuous page numbers are on by default; Auto TOC and Unified styles are one click away.
  3. 3Click Merge Word Documents. Open the result in Word and verify the Bookmarks pane lists every chapter — that's the marker of a real merge.

Why ExcelMaster.ai's Word Merger leaves the rest behind

  • Bookmarks generated automatically

Every free Word merger we tested ships the merged document with an empty Bookmarks pane. We generate one bookmark per source so the result has a working chapter outline from the moment you open it.

  • Auto TOC actually works on first open

Aspose-shell sites and Combinepdf sometimes insert TOC placeholders that show 'Right-click → Update Field' until the user manually populates them. We run UpdateFields() on save — your TOC is populated the moment you open the file.

  • Page numbers stay continuous

Every source's RestartPageNumbering override is stripped before save. Chapter 1 runs from page 1; chapter 2 picks up at the next available page. No more amateur 'chapter 2 starts at page 1' look.

  • Unified styles when you need them

The 'force_unify_styles' toggle uses ImportFormatMode.UseDestinationStyles so Heading 1 / Heading 2 / Normal resolve to the FIRST document's style table. Your merged output looks like a published volume, not a Frankenstein of drafts.

  • Free, no signup, no watermark, ever

DocFly caps you at 5 free merges per day. Word.to throttles to 2 per hour. ChinaTransfer-style sites paywall after 4 files. We don't. 50 files, 100 MB each, every day, free.

  • Up to 50 files / 100 MB each

Beats Aspose-shell sites (40 MB), Word.to (10 MB), DocFly (10 MB). Designed for thesis chapters and multi-volume contract bundles where a free tier ought to handle the size, not punt to a paywall.

Frequently asked questions

Do my files leave the browser?

Yes — the merge happens on our backend so we can run the chapter-bookmark generation and TOC update reliably (browser-only Word libraries can't reproduce these). Files are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3), processed on a hardened cloud worker, and auto-deleted after one hour. We never log file contents and never share data with third parties. Audit-grade compliance for legal and financial workflows.

Why does my merged document have empty bookmarks in iLovePDF?

Because iLovePDF treats Word as a side-effect of its PDF pipeline — it converts your .docx to PDF, merges the PDFs, then converts back. The bookmark layer doesn't survive that round-trip. ExcelMaster.ai stays in the Word OOXML format end-to-end so bookmarks, fields, comments, and tracked changes all preserve.

What's 'unified styles' and when should I use it?

It forces every appended chapter to use the FIRST document's style table — so Heading 1 looks the same throughout, Normal is the same paragraph spacing, the title page font is consistent, etc. Use it when you have a unified template (thesis, brand-guideline doc, multi-author novel). Don't use it when each source's formatting is intentional (legal contracts where each contract's font conveys meaning).

Why is my Table of Contents empty?

Two reasons. (1) The source documents don't use Heading 1/2/3 styles — Word's TOC field sniffs heading styles to build entries. Apply Heading 1 to your chapter titles before merging. (2) UpdateFields didn't run; this shouldn't happen with our pipeline (we always call UpdateFields on save), but if you saved over the file in Word, hit Ctrl+A → F9 to refresh the field.

Can I merge .doc (Word 97-2003) files?

Yes. We accept .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt, .dotx, .docm, and .dotm. The output defaults to .docx (modern Word format) but you can pick .doc or .rtf if your downstream tool needs legacy compatibility.

How are encrypted documents handled?

Drop them in like any other file. Our backend detects the encrypted-document signal, returns a 'needs_password' response, and the frontend pops a password modal asking only for that file's password. We never brute-force, never store the password, never log it. Cancel the modal and we won't include that file in the merge.
