Why Convert XLSX Back to XLS
XLS (Excel 97-2003) is the legacy format Microsoft replaced in 2007. Yet it lives on — most accounting software, government tax portals, older ERP systems, and embedded VBA tooling still expect .xls. If your team standardized on .xlsx but a downstream consumer can only read .xls, you need a high-fidelity downgrade path.
The downgrade isn't trivial. XLS has a 65,536-row limit (vs XLSX's 1,048,576). Cell content is capped at 32,767 characters (XLSX too) but conditional formatting rules can be lost. Silent row truncation at 65,536
If your XLSX has more than 65,536 rows, naive converters drop everything past row 65,536 without warning. ExcelMaster blocks the conversion until you confirm or split the file first.
Modern formulas break
XLOOKUP, FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, LET, LAMBDA — none of these existed in Excel 2003. Cells with these functions become #NAME? errors. Use the pre-flight report to identify them and replace with INDEX/MATCH alternatives before converting.
Conditional formatting silently drops

Will I lose my macros?
If your input is .xlsm (macro-enabled XLSX), no — macros are preserved as VBA modules in the .xls output. If your input is plain .xlsx, there are no macros to lose.
What's the row limit again?
65,536 rows × 256 columns in XLS. Anything larger gets truncated. ExcelMaster's pre-flight check warns you before conversion if your data exceeds this.
