Convert XLSX to XLS

Convert XLSX to XLS online for free — no signup, no size limit, lossless conversion. Works on any device.

Built on enterprise-grade document engines. You'll notice the difference — sharper formatting, accurate formulas, and preserved charts and merged cells that other free tools lose.

Why Convert XLSX Back to XLS

XLS (Excel 97-2003) is the legacy format Microsoft replaced in 2007. Yet it lives on — most accounting software, government tax portals, older ERP systems, and embedded VBA tooling still expect .xls. If your team standardized on .xlsx but a downstream consumer can only read .xls, you need a high-fidelity downgrade path.

The downgrade isn't trivial. XLS has a 65,536-row limit (vs XLSX's 1,048,576). Cell content is capped at 32,767 characters (XLSX too) but conditional formatting rules can be lost. Recent XLSX features — XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, LET/LAMBDA — collapse to #NAME? errors in Excel 2003. The good converters warn about these before destroying your data.

ExcelMaster runs a pre-flight check: row count, formula compatibility, conditional formatting count, and Excel version detection. If anything will downgrade lossy, you see the warning before the .xls is generated — not after.

How to Convert XLSX to XLS Without Losing Data

  1. 1

    Drop your .xlsx file(s)

Up to 10 files at once. The tool also accepts .xlsm (with macros) and .xlsb (binary) — they all downgrade to .xls.

  2. 2

    Pre-flight compatibility check runs automatically

We scan for: row count > 65,536 (will be truncated), columns > 256 (will be truncated), modern formula functions (XLOOKUP, FILTER, SORT, LAMBDA, LET), conditional formatting rule count > 3, and PivotTable count. You see a warning report before conversion starts.

  3. 3

Choose: convert anyway, or fix in Excel first

If the report flags critical losses (e.g., 200,000-row data truncated to 65,536), you can cancel and split the workbook first. ExcelMaster's Excel Splitter tool handles the row-based split cleanly.

  4. 4

ExcelMaster runs the legitimate XLS save path

Not a renamed XLSX — a real BIFF8-format save. Opens in Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 without compatibility warnings. Macros (in .xlsm input) are preserved as VBA modules.

  5. 5

    Conditional formatting is downgraded

XLS supports up to 3 conditional formatting rules per range; XLSX supports unlimited. We collapse rules in priority order — the top 3 win, the rest are dropped with a notice in the conversion log.

  6. 6

    Download the .xls file

Single file download. The output is a real BIFF8 file, not a fake. SHA256 verified against the same converter logic Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack uses.

ExcelMaster vs Other XLSX to XLS Converters

The XLS downgrade has many silent failure modes. Here's how the major converters handle them.

Same Conversion in Code

If you'd rather automate, here's the equivalent. Note that pure-Python xlwt only supports basic XLS (no macros) — the web tool uses a richer engine.

Common XLSX to XLS Pitfalls

Silent row truncation at 65,536

If your XLSX has more than 65,536 rows, naive converters drop everything past row 65,536 without warning. ExcelMaster blocks the conversion until you confirm or split the file first.

Modern formulas break

XLOOKUP, FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, LET, LAMBDA — none of these existed in Excel 2003. Cells with these functions become #NAME? errors. Use the pre-flight report to identify them and replace with INDEX/MATCH alternatives before converting.

Conditional formatting silently drops

XLS supports up to 3 conditional formatting rules per range. Excess rules are dropped in priority order. ExcelMaster's conversion log lists exactly which rules were dropped.

Long text content gets truncated

XLS cells max out at 32,767 characters per cell — same as XLSX, but XLS's display in Excel 2003 truncates at 1,024. Long-form text content (paragraphs, notes) may render incompletely.

XLSX to XLS — Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I want to downgrade from XLSX to XLS in 2026?

Compatibility with legacy systems: government tax portals (still rejecting .xlsx in some countries), older accounting software (QuickBooks 2010 era), embedded ERP exports, some Mac Excel 2008 / Numbers older versions, and old VBA macro frameworks.

Will I lose my macros?

If your input is .xlsm (macro-enabled XLSX), no — macros are preserved as VBA modules in the .xls output. If your input is plain .xlsx, there are no macros to lose.

What's the row limit again?

65,536 rows × 256 columns in XLS. Anything larger gets truncated. ExcelMaster's pre-flight check warns you before conversion if your data exceeds this.

Can I batch convert 50 XLSX files at once?

Free tier supports 10 files at a time. For larger batches, use the desktop add-in (no upload limit) or run the converter via the Python / JavaScript snippets above in a loop.

Why does my converted .xls open with errors in Excel 2003?

Almost always one of: modern formulas (XLOOKUP, etc.), too many conditional formatting rules, or a sheet name longer than 31 characters. Run the pre-flight check — it flags all three.

Is the output a real .xls or a renamed .xlsx?

Real BIFF8 .xls. Some sketchy converters rename the file extension and call it done — Excel 2003 then refuses to open it. ExcelMaster runs a real BIFF8 save through a parser that's been validated against Microsoft's Office Compatibility Pack.

What is XLS?

XLS is a file format used by Microsoft Excel to store spreadsheet data. It is a binary file format that allows users to create, retrieve, and analyze data through a variety of features like formulas, charts, and tables. XLS files are commonly used for data management, financial calculations, and reporting in various business and educational environments.

Data Loss

When converting to XLS, some complex formatting or advanced features from newer Excel versions may not be supported, leading to potential data loss or errors.

Incompatibility Issues

Older software may not support the XLS format, causing issues when trying to open, edit, or share files with users who have older versions of Excel.

File Size Increase

Converting to XLS can sometimes result in a larger file size than expected, which may affect storage and sharing capabilities.

Formula Breakage

Certain formulas or functions in newer Excel formats may not translate correctly into XLS, potentially leading to incorrect calculations in the converted file.
