Why most PDF-to-Word tools lose your formatting

Most free PDF→Word converters fragment paragraphs, drop fonts, turn tables into stacked text boxes and replace images with broken placeholders. ExcelMaster.ai is built on the same class of enterprise-grade document processing technology that financial institutions and Fortune 100 companies trust for mission-critical workflows. We've made it free, with no compromises on output quality, no signup, and no daily limits.

What you actually get back

  • Encrypted PDFs in one step

Other tools force you to unlock first, then convert. We accept the password directly — encrypted PDF in, editable Word out, in a single click.

  • CJK fonts preserved

Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other non-Latin scripts are notoriously broken on free tools. Our engine preserves font metrics, character spacing and CJK paragraph flow — out of the box.

  • Tables rebuilt as Word tables

Real Word table objects with the right number of rows, columns and merged cells. Not stacked text boxes. Not screenshots.

  • Images and shapes kept in place

Photos, diagrams, signatures and shapes stay at their original positions and sizes — embedded inside the Word document as native objects, not as broken external references.

  • Page range support

Convert just pages 1-3, 5, 7-10 — useful when you only need a chapter, an appendix or a single section out of a long PDF.

  • Six output formats

docx (default) · doc · rtf · html · txt · epub — pick whichever your downstream workflow expects.

How to convert PDF to Word

  1. 1Upload your PDF — drag & drop up to 5 files (50 MB each), no signup required.
  2. 2Pick output format — docx by default; doc, rtf, html, txt and epub also available per file.
  3. 3Click Convert — typically under 5 seconds for plain PDFs, longer for image-heavy or multi-column documents.
  4. 4Download — files auto-delete from our servers within 1 hour.

Why ExcelMaster outperforms the popular alternatives

  • Truly free — no daily limits, no paywall traps

5 conversions per day, 5 files at once, 50 MB per file — all free forever. No 'preview-then-paywall' tricks. Compare to Smallpdf (2/day, OCR locked), iLovePDF Premium ($5–$9/month for batch), Adobe Acrobat ($22.99/month).

  • Output quality, not just format conversion

Open-source PDF→Word libraries lose fidelity on tables, fonts and CJK characters. Our engine class is what commercial document workflows are built on — and we ship it free.

  • Privacy-first by design

TLS 1.3 in transit · AES-256 at rest · 1-hour auto-delete · no human review · we never train AI on your file content.

  • Multilingual support — 10 interface languages

    English · Deutsch · Español · Français · Italiano · 日本語 · 한국어 · Português · Русский · Türkçe — full hreflang, fully translated, not auto-MT.

  • Works on any platform

Web app — Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android — same quality everywhere. No installer, no admin permissions.

  • Independent benchmark — see for yourself

We publish our methodology, test corpus and replication scripts at /benchmarks. No marketing fluff — just numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tool truly free? What's the catch?

There's no catch. Free tier: 5 conversions per day, 5 files at once, 50 MB per file, encrypted PDFs included. We monetize through our optional ExcelMaster Add-in (AI inside Excel), not through this converter.

Can it handle encrypted (password-protected) PDFs?

Yes — provide the password and we convert as usual. Most free competitors force a two-step flow (unlock first, then convert). We do it in one. We do NOT attempt to brute-force or crack passwords.

Does it support Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other non-Latin scripts?

Yes. CJK font metrics, character spacing and paragraph flow are preserved out of the box. Most free converters break CJK by stripping fonts or fragmenting double-byte characters across paragraph breaks.

Will my tables come out as real Word tables?

Yes — real Word table objects with rows, columns and merged cells preserved. Not stacked text boxes. Not flattened screenshots.

Can it handle scanned PDFs (image-only / no text layer)?

Detection ships now; full OCR-aware conversion (145 languages with AI proofreading) is rolling out in our next release.

What about multi-column documents — academic papers, newspapers, magazines?

Two-column and three-column layouts are preserved by default. We also have a 'Reflow to single column' mode rolling out in our next release.

What output formats are supported?

docx (default), doc, rtf, html, txt, epub. docx is the universal Word format — works in Microsoft Word 2007+, LibreOffice, Google Docs, Apple Pages.

Where are my files stored? For how long?

TLS 1.3 to our EU/US data centers · AES-256 at rest · automatic deletion within 1 hour of conversion. No human reviews your file. We do not use your content to train any AI model.

What's the file size limit?

50 MB per file in the free tier — generous for the industry (PDF24 100 MB, Smallpdf 100 MB but OCR locked, iLovePDF 25 MB free).

Why does my conversion take 30+ seconds?

Image-heavy PDFs with many embedded photos, multi-column academic layouts, or scanned-document detection trigger our slower precision pipeline.

How does ExcelMaster compare to iLovePDF / Smallpdf / Adobe?

iLovePDF locks OCR behind a $5–$9/month Premium tier; Smallpdf limits free users to 2 conversions/day with OCR Pro-only; Adobe Acrobat Pro is $22.99/month. ExcelMaster is free, with output quality that matches or beats these.

Can I use this commercially?

Yes — the free tier permits commercial use. You retain full ownership of your file content.
