Why we built another Word splitter
Every other free "Word splitter" online forces you to convert your .docx to PDF first, split the PDF, and convert each slice back to Word — losing fonts, tables, and tracked changes along the way. We split the .docx natively. The output is real Word files that open exactly the way the source did, with the same Heading styles, headers, footers, comments, and tracked changes. And we ship four cutting modes — page, page range, heading, and section break — so you don't have to chain three tools to get one job done.

Frequently asked questions
What file formats can I split?
Microsoft Word .docx (Office 2007+) and .doc (legacy Word 97-2003 binary format). The output is always .docx — modern, smaller, and what every Word version since 2007 opens natively.
How is by-heading different from by-section?
By-section uses Word's built-in Section abstraction (the page-bounded run between two section breaks). By-heading reads your Heading 1 / 2 / 3 styled paragraphs and slices between them. Most documents don't have section breaks the way authors think they do — but most documents that need splitting (contracts, theses, books, RFPs) DO have heading styles. By-heading is what most users actually want.
What if my document has no heading styles?
We preview the document first and tell you upfront — "Source document has no headings at the requested level." Switch to By page, By page range, or By section. Or open the document in Word, apply Heading 1 to your chapter titles, and re-upload.
Are tracked changes, comments, and formatting preserved?
Yes. Each output file is a real Word document with the same Heading styles, fonts, tables, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, and revision history as the source. We don't round-trip through PDF or HTML.
What about encrypted documents?
Supported. When you upload an encrypted .docx, we'll prompt for the open password (the one Word asks for when you double-click the file). The password is sent only with this request, decrypts the document in memory, and is never persisted.
How big a file can I upload?
100 MB per upload. That's enough for a 1000-page enterprise contract or a 500-page book manuscript. If you need more, drop us a line — we'll see what we can do.
Are my uploads private?
Yes. 256-bit HTTPS in transit, per-request file isolation (your file is never reachable from anyone else's session), no human review, no AI training, no cookie-based tracking. We delete uploads after one hour.
Will the output preserve hyperlinks and cross-references?
Hyperlinks: yes, fully preserved. Cross-references that point to text outside the slice (e.g. "see Chapter 5" when Chapter 5 is in a different output file) become inert text — Word can't follow a reference into a different document. We surface this in the manifest.
What's in the manifest.json file?
A plain-text JSON listing every output file with its name, page count, source page range, byte size, group key (the heading title or range string), and Heading level. Same data shows in the result table on this page. Audit-grade traceability.
How fast is it?
Sub-second for typical documents under 100 pages. Larger documents (500+ pages) finish in 5-15 seconds. We process on enterprise-grade infrastructure with the same engine commercial tools cost $99/month for.
Can I split into PDFs instead of Word files?
