Most free Word comparison tools miss the formatting changes. We don't.
Compare two contract drafts on a typical free site and you get a flat list of text edits — but the indentation that shifted a clause, the font change that buried a disclaimer, and the comment that was quietly deleted all slip through. ExcelMaster.ai's Word Compare is built on the same class of enterprise-grade document engine trusted in legal e-discovery and financial audit. It produces a tracked-changes report that opens in Word with the full Review pane — every insertion, deletion and move marked by author and timestamp — and an optional precision mode that counts changes across twelve dimensions: text, paragraph and character formatting, comments, tables, images, headers and footers, footnotes, numbering, styles and hyperlinks. No signup, no watermark, files auto-deleted after one hour.
What you actually get back
A real tracked-changes report
The output opens in Word with the standard Review pane. Every insertion, deletion and move is marked with an author and timestamp — accept, reject or comment on each change exactly as you would with native Word tracked changes.
Insertions, deletions and format changes counted
The summary tells you at a glance how many words were added, how many were removed, and how many formatting changes were applied — before you open the file.
12-dimension precision diff
Turn on precision mode and the report counts changes across twelve dimensions: text revisions, paragraph and character formatting, comments, tracked changes, tables, images, headers and footers, footnotes, numbering, styles and hyperlinks.
Word, PDF, RTF, HTML and more
Save the report as DOCX to keep working in Word, or as PDF for an immediately shareable, tamper-evident archive copy. DOC, RTF, ODT, HTML and TXT are available too.
Encrypted documents accepted
Upload a password-protected file and we prompt for the open password. We never brute-force, never store the password, never log it. Comparison runs as usual once unlocked.
No Word installation required
The comparison runs on our backend, so it works from any browser on any operating system. You never need Microsoft Word installed to produce a professional redline.
Three clicks to a complete change report
- 1Upload your original document into slot A — this is the baseline version every change is measured against.
- 2Upload the revised document into slot B. Optionally open Advanced options to choose the report format or switch on the 12-dimension precision diff.
- 3Click Compare Documents. Open the report in Word, review every tracked change, and download the PDF audit copy if you need one.
Why ExcelMaster.ai's Word Compare leaves the rest behind
Formatting changes are never missed
Text-only diff tools flag the words that changed but miss the indentation, font and spacing edits that quietly change a document's meaning. Precision mode counts every one of them.
A report you can actually act on
The output is a genuine tracked-changes document — not a static side-by-side image. Open it in Word and accept or reject each change, exactly as your review workflow expects.
Audit-grade detail
The precision report breaks changes down across twelve dimensions and records both documents' details, so legal and finance teams get the evidence trail an audit requires.
Works without Microsoft Word
Comparison happens server-side, so you get a professional redline from any browser — no Word licence, no desktop install, no plugin.
Free, no signup, no watermark, ever
No account, no daily cap, no watermark stamped across your report. Compare as many document pairs as you need, every day, at no cost.
Files auto-deleted after one hour
Both uploads and the generated report are removed from our servers one hour after processing. We never log file contents and never share data with third parties.
Frequently asked questions
What does the comparison report contain?
A tracked-changes document: your revised text with every insertion, deletion and move marked as a Word revision, attributed to an author and timestamp. Open it in Word and the Review pane lists every change so you can accept, reject or comment on each one.
Do my files leave the browser?
Yes — the comparison runs on our backend so we can produce a reliable tracked-changes report (browser-only libraries cannot reproduce this). Files are encrypted in transit with TLS, processed on a hardened cloud worker, and auto-deleted one hour after processing. We never log file contents and never share data with third parties.
What is the 12-dimension precision diff?
By default the comparison reports text insertions, deletions and formatting changes. Switch on precision mode and it additionally counts changes across paragraph formatting, character formatting, comments, tracked changes, tables, images, headers and footers, footnotes, numbering, styles and hyperlinks — twelve dimensions in total. Use it for audit and compliance workflows where formatting changes matter as much as text edits.
Which file formats can I compare?
Inputs may be .docx, .doc, .dotx, .docm, .dotm, .rtf, .odt, .ott, .html, .htm, .xhtml, .txt or .md. The report can be saved as DOCX, DOC, RTF, PDF, HTML, ODT, TXT or EPUB.
Can I compare two PDF files?
Word Compare diffs Word-family documents. To compare PDFs, convert each to .docx first, then upload both here. The report can still be saved as PDF if that is the format you need to share.
Do I need Microsoft Word installed?
No. The comparison runs on our servers, so it works from any browser on any operating system. You only need Word if you want to open the resulting tracked-changes report and accept or reject changes interactively — and even then, any app that reads .docx will display the revisions.
How are documents that already contain tracked changes handled?
If a source document already has tracked changes, those existing revisions are accepted first so they become part of the baseline, then the two documents are compared. This means the report shows the changes between the two versions, not a mix of old and new revisions.
What happens with password-protected documents?
Upload them like any other file. If a document is encrypted, we return a password request and the page asks only for that document's open password. We never brute-force, never store the password, never log it. Cancel the prompt and the comparison stops.
Can I ignore minor changes like capitalisation?
Yes. Advanced options let you ignore case changes, formatting changes, and header/footer changes so the report focuses on the edits that matter to you.
Is the comparison accurate for legal redlines?
Yes. The engine marks every insertion, deletion and move as a proper Word revision with author and timestamp, and precision mode adds a per-dimension breakdown. This is the same kind of redline lawyers expect from a document-comparison tool — produced in seconds, free.
Is there a file size limit?
Each document may be up to 100 MB. That comfortably covers contracts, theses, policy manuals and book manuscripts. Very large documents simply take a little longer to compare.
Is this really free? What's the catch?
It is really free — no signup, no watermark, no daily cap. We fund our infrastructure with a paid Excel automation add-in for power users; the free tools introduce the brand. We do not sell your data and we do not run ads.
